Rescued Baby Dolphin Being Nursed To Health

After being washed ashore, apparently injured by a fishing net, the baby dolphin approximately 10 days old is nursed back to health. The baby dolphin was discovered by walkers on the banks of La Plata river near Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. They did not find the sign of a mother nearby.

Below are the magnificent pictures of the tiny dolphin now named Nipper – and the concerned penguin who oversaw his care. The erect-crested penguin is an oil spill rescue who’s also recuperating at the reserve .

An erect-crested penguin watches as Richard Tesore, head of the NGO Rescate Fauna Marina, holds a baby La Plata river dolphin in Piriapolis, 100 km (62 miles) east of Montevideo, November 5, 2010.

Take a close look at the incredible Glasswing, an enchanting species that confounds science.

The Glasswinged butterfly (Greta oto) is a beautiful brush-footed butterfly. Greta oto adults exhibit a number of interesting behaviours, such as long migrations and lekking (gathering of males for competitive mating displays). The wings are translucent, with a wingspan of 5.6 to 6.1 cm (2.2 to 2.4 in). Its most common English name is glasswinged butterfly, and its Spanish name is “espejitos”, which means “little mirrors.”
The Glasswinged butterfly gets its name because the tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass, as it lacks the coloured scales found in other butterflies [Source: Wikipedia].

A close look at Greta oto reveals that between the veins of its wings the tissue is virtually see through) or, properly, translucent). Most other butterflies have colored scales which pattern the wings, quite often to ward off predators. The glasswing has another way of doing this entirely, but over the millennia it has evolved these specific wings to hide itself from predators rather than to warn them off. The only way that you can tell that it has wings at all are the borders, which are of a dark hue, sometimes bordering on the orange. Were it not for these borders, the glasswing would be more or less invisible to the human eye.

The quagga is an extinct subspecies of the plains zebra, which was once found in great numbers in the Highveld of the Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State in South Africa.

One of Africa's most famous extinct animals, the quagga was a subspecies of the plains zebra, which was once found in the great numbers in South Africa's Cape Province and the southern part of the Orange Free State. It was distinguished from other zebras by having the usual vivid marks on the front part of the body only. In the mid-section of it, the stripes faded and the dark, inter-stripe spaces became wider and the hindquarters were a plain brown. The name comes from a Khoikhoi word for zebra and is onomatopoeic, being said to resemble the quagga's call.
